it looks like goodbye...
... but is it? does the girl standing on the edge of the water really know the guy paddling away on the banca? or is this a fiction created by the contingencies that brought them together in the frame?
but more importantly: can you really trust a photograph to tell the truth? or given the very elusiveness of "truth", does a photograph merely show its own version of the truth?
taken near the foot of the marcelo fernan bridge, on the mandaue side, june 2010

a picture a day: october 2010
the tenth month of my project 365. it's an open ended project, anything goes, but with one rule: at least a picture a day... well, sort of. after 9 months of faithfully observing that rule, the streak finally broke. 3 pictureless days for october, and it goes downhill from there till december.
i guess it reached the point where it became too much of a chore to find or make a compelling picture everyday. and with all the clients and projects from my day job screaming for my attention, i had to make a choice.
interestingly, the officemates whose pictures i've taken here have all resigned. hmmm...

2010.10.01 tricycle driver on overdrive, cabancalan, mandaue city

2010.10.04 the unfortunate case of a cabancalan tricycle driver who, in his attempt to escape from the citom, ran over the motorcycles that the citom used to barricade his escape route back to mandaue. the police arrested him, i think on the grounds of avoiding arrest, damage to government property, and the endangerment of citom personnel.
it's easy to blame the driver, who made an eggheaded decision in trying to escape from the citom. but this is also a case of government policy being insensitive to the plight of the little people.
you see, one end of the route of cabancalan tricycle drivers (who are registered only in mandaue city) reaches into the territory of cebu city. at the start of mike rama's term, the citom implemented this policy of not allowing cabancalan tricycle drivers to enter cebu city, which affected both the tricycle drivers (because they could no longer pick up the passengers from the end of cabancalan who are going to mandaue) and the tricycle riding public (because they now had to walk a considerable distance from the border of mandaue city to get to the talamban jeepney routes and vice versa). but apparently, the cebu city government doesn't care about any of this.
but there are some renegade tricycle drivers who still go into cebu city just to get the passengers getting of from talamban and going to mandaue, with considerable risk. if caught, the citom will impound their tricycles, which is probably their sole source of income, and they'll have to pay a fine of somewhere around 10,000 pesos to have their tricycles released. thus, the motivation of the tricycle driver to try and escape.
i'm not sure though if citom still implements this policy, but it's unfortunate that neither citom nor cebu city hall were circumspect in the creation of their policies to begin with.
